Edmonton pushes for trial of self-driving cars Edmonton could get involved in its first self-driving vehicle test via a light-duty shuttle at the University of Alberta's south campus. The city's urban planning committee is scheduled to learn more about the pilot project Wednesday afternoon, likely starting around 2 p.m. or 2:30 p.m., based on its position on the agenda. The city has a cross-departmental working group monitoring the new technology. In a report released last week, staff said they hope the pilot project will help the Government of Alberta write legislation to allow further testing of the new technology. In the past, city officials have said these types of public semi-autonomous vehicles will likely be the first that Edmonton residents will see on city streets. The first viable form of automation might be a bus system that would only require one driver for a row of express buses driving down a road.
